Tony Hoffman

Tony Hoffman recently spoke to our LCC students about his journey through difficult times, mental health, and the power of making positive choices. Hoffman shared that his struggles began at a young age and eventually led him down a difficult path. During his senior year, he experienced homelessness and later spent two years in prison. While in prison, a quote he saw on the ceiling changed the way he viewed his future:

“Be careful what you think, because your thoughts become your words. Be careful what you say because your words become your actions. Be careful what you do, because your actions become your habits. Be careful what you make a habit, because your habits become your character and your character becomes your destiny.” That message became a turning point for Hoffman. Instead of allowing his past to define him, he created four goals for his future: to race BMX professionally, go to the Olympics, start his own nonprofit organization, and become a professional speaker focusing on substance abuse and mental health.

Hoffman went on to accomplish all four. His BMX career eventually brought him to the Olympic Games as a coach, making his journey from prison to the Olympics especially meaningful. Throughout his presentation, Hoffman emphasized the importance of mental health and reaching out when someone is struggling. He encouraged our students not to keep their struggles to themselves and to find someone they trust to talk to. Hoffman’s story reminded our students that difficult experiences do not have to determine their future. By making different choices, setting goals and asking for help when needed, people can create a new direction for their lives.
